Humanity has industrialized agriculture and since the development of heavy equipment, synthetic fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides our land has been degraded. In fact, ⅓ of the Earth’s soils have now been desertified. This means that the Earth’s soils are not able to retain water, build carbon and carry the diversity of life and nutrients that allows our food to be healthy.
If we design for ecological diversity we can have a food system that not only provides for our needs but also builds life, increases nutrients and allows for regeneration and restoration of natural ecosystems. Our indigenous ancestors (and many cultures still today) knew how to work with natural ecosystems without harming the planet. So, we look to them to guide us back. We look to the blueprint of nature to guide us toward a better system.
With regenerative poultry production we have the opportunity to harvest the potential with diverse ecosystems instead of relying on farming systems that control and dominate our farmland with non-diverse and non-natural approaches. To achieve these outcomes we need to address our cropping systems and our use and type of inputs.
